Case Study: Installation of a Nilan Compact P System

Client: Timber Frame It
Project: Installation of a Nilan Compact P System
Location: 50 Westfield Close

Problem to be Solved: The client approached SL Services with several specific requirements, knowing that our system could meet these needs. They required a solution that complied with Passive House ventilation regulations, provided active heating and cooling, and produced domestic hot water.

Existing System: The property was a new build, beginning from the ground up to create a highly insulated and airtight house. The client had previously lived in a Passive House with MVHR, which was not correctly built or installed, leading to dissatisfaction.

Proposed Solution: We recommended the Nilan Compact P as the most suitable solution to address all the client’s needs. This system is known for its comprehensive capabilities, including passive house ventilation, active heating and cooling, and domestic hot water production.

Compact P System Installation Process:

  • Initial Site Visit: We conducted a site visit to meet the client and inspect the job site. This allowed us to determine the optimal placement for our equipment (manifolds, plenum boxes, machines, and atmosphere penetrations) to ensure maximum efficiency and reduced running costs.
  • First Phase: Our lead engineer, Ben, started the installation by fitting the equipment and verifying with the client the placement of plenum boxes. This phase took a few weeks.
  • Machine Installation: The Nilan Compact P was installed in a cupboard next to the kitchen. Connections from the manifolds and atmosphere penetrations to the machine were made using ISO pipe.
  • Final Commissioning: After a week, the client informed us they were ready for air-side commissioning. Ben returned to complete the final phase, ensuring the system was balanced for optimal performance.

Challenges and Solutions: The installation was executed smoothly without any issues, thanks to our thorough pre-planning. This ensured that we could address any potential problems before they arose, keeping the client satisfied throughout the process.

Products Used:

  • Nilan Compact P
  • Semi-rigid 75mm ducting
  • 160mm ISO pipe
  • 1, 2, 3 gang plenum boxes
  • 12-port manifold
  • 10-port manifold

System Functionality: The Nilan Compact P operates by drawing in outside air and filtering it through internal filters. The filtered air is then injected into habitable rooms at the desired temperature. Simultaneously, the system extracts foul air from rooms such as the kitchen and utility rooms. Additionally, the Nilan Compact P can cool the incoming air using a fridge gas circuit, a unique feature not offered by other systems on the market.

Project Outcome: The project was completed successfully, with the client expressing satisfaction with both the process and the final result. Our careful planning and expert installation ensured that the system met all the client’s requirements and performed efficiently.
